How to Prepare for a Phone Interview

The phone screen interview may only be 15–30 minutes long, but it plays a big role in your job search. This first-round conversation is often the first step towards a formal interview, so treat it with care!

I recently spent over an hour coaching a client who had an upcoming 15-minute introductory call. They hadn’t interviewed in a while, and their responses felt a little rusty. By the end of our session, they felt clear, confident, and ready to make a lasting impression (and they got invited back for the next round)!

So how can YOU prepare? Here are 5 tips designed to bring you success in your next phone interview!

  1. Understand What Recruiters Are Looking For

I’ve conducted hundreds of screening interviews for hiring managers. Here’s what I looking for:

  • Strong, Clear and Confident Communication skills

  • Relevant Career Experience

  • A clear understanding of your past experience

  • Your Interest and connection to the role

You don’t need to recite your entire resume, but you do need to come across as clear, concise, and excited about the opportunity.

2. Prep for the Most Common Questions

There are a few questions that almost always come up in phone screens. Focus on these responses to start:

Tell me about yourself. (Keep your this brief and relevant. Summarize your career path, highlight a few key strengths, and connect them to the role you’re applying for. This is your elevator pitch!)

Why did you leave your last job (or why are you looking)? (Be honest and professional. Focus on what you're looking for now rather than what wasn’t working in the past.

Why are you interested in this role/company? Show that you’ve done your homework. Reference the company’s mission, values, or work culture, and tie it back to your own goals and interests.

3. Create a Calm, Distraction-Free Environment

Even though it’s a brief phone or video call, it’s still an interview. Take it seriously.

  • Have a quiet space free from distractions.

  • Keep your resume and a notebook handy for reference and note taking.

  • If it’s Zoom, maintain eye contact with the interviewer, and dress professionally top to bottom - you’ll feel more prepared too!

4. Practice Out Loud
You don’t have to memorize your answers—but practicing them out loud help you answer them more succinctly and confidently.
Practice with a friend, a coach, or even try recording yourself.

5. Have Questions Ready
You may have the chance to ask the interviewer a question or two if time allows. Have a few thoughtful questions in case you are prompted. Here are a few suggestions of questions to ask at the end of your interview:

  • What are the top qualities you’re looking for in a candidate?

  • What do you enjoy most about working at this company?

  • What does the interview process look like after this step?

With the right prep and understanding of the phone screen or introductory interview process, you can turn that brief interview into a introduction that leaves the interviewer wanting to learn more - and get’s you invited back!
